The Impact of Internet Evolution on Mobile and Ubiquitous Networking

Abstract: Internet Evolution put a large impact on our daily life. The Internet is a big enabler of our future society. Recently, the Internet technology is going to have a big leap which is called Future Internet. Underlying technologies are, for example, Software Defined Network, network virtualization, Contents Centric Network and Delay Tolerant Network. In this talk, we think about how these new technologies have impact on mobile and ubiquitous networking, and especially on smart city applications.
Biography: Shinji Shimojo received the M.E. and Ph.D. degrees from Osaka University in 1983 and 1986, respectively. He was an Assistant Professor with the Department of Information and Computer Sciences, Faculty of Engineering Science at Osaka University from 1986, and an Associate Professor with Computation Center from 1991 to 1998. During this period, he also worked for a year as a Visiting Researcher at the University of California, Irvine. He has been a Professor with the Cybermedia Center (then the Computation Center) at Osaka University since 1998, and from 2005 to 2008 had been the director of the Center. He is an executive researcher at National Institute of Information and Communications Technology and a director of Network Testbed Research and Development Promotion Center. His current research work is focusing on a wide variety of multimedia applications, peer-to-peer communication networks, ubiquitous network systems, and Grid technologies. He was awarded the Osaka Science Prize in 2005. He is a member of IEEE, and IEICE and IPSJ fellow.

Abstract: Urbanisation as a trend has great influence on personal mobility and lifestyle. Singapore faces no exception in the face of rapid urbanisation, with the strong need to allocate land for economic, social, infrastructural and national needs. Emerging technology trends such as Open Data, Internet of Things, Wearable Sensors, and Geospatial technologies will impact our journey to a liveable and sustainable city. Research, along with pilots and trials in real-world situations will be key to build Future Cities.
Biography: Mr Leong Mun Yuen is the Chief Technology Officer & Senior Director of the Technology and Planning Group at the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore. He is responsible for providing technology leadership and technology planning at IDA as well as IDA’s vision for Infocomm directions. Before joining IDA, Mr Leong was the Global Chief Technology Officer at Avaya Inc. At Avaya, he was responsible for Avaya’s technology strategy, architecture, standards and R&D investments. Mr Leong was also the Vice-President and General Manager of the Communications Appliances Division of Avaya. Prior to Avaya, Mr Leong held senior positions at Lucent Technologies, AT&T, and Hewlett Packard.
